Cooked dog haiku
I have never tasted dog. Have you? Apparently it is not on the menu in Beijing during the Olympic games. The haiku is obviously just to test to see if you are still reading the haikus, and to see how many people out there have tasted dog before. My guess is that it is not so special. Many like... a less lambier version of lamb. Who knows, that's just a guess. You gotta hand it to those Chinese (wait a minute, that's racist and I am Chinese!) We eat everything. Did anyone else see that bit they did on NBC where some reporter when to go try fried scorpions? There's supposed to be fried starfish as well. Somehow I really doubt those things taste as good as bacon.
But scorpions and dogs aside, there's some good eats in China. Just check out Anthony Bourdain on No Reservations: Beijing. See how good that duck looks? Now why does US swimming Ryan Lochte only eat at McDonald's while at the Olympics?
Most people brush that aside as, "haha, he just doesn't like dog or scorpions." But I think that's just effing CRAZY. Maybe I'm just odd because both Eastern and Western cuisines appeal to me... but how can you not eat Chinese food when you go to China?! What kinda crap is that? Also puzzling are folks who say stuff like, "I won't eat fish/vegetables/etc." WTF?!?! WTF? And US Basketball player Dwyane Wade (no that spelling is correct) does not eat seafood or vegetables!?
That pisses me off. It just does. Yes, you say they can eat whatever they want. Sure, but WTF?!?! I think my brain just exploded. Granted, as Olympic athletes, they probably do not have the time that Anothing Bourdain's production team has, and athletes probably cannot scout out good places to eat. Time is valuable and they cannot spend time eating stuff from the side of the street. Those are fine reasons... I suppose. So here's my thing... whenever someone tells me they won't eat something... I judge 'em. Look 'em up and down and decide the fate of their petunias. Why? And do you try it first before dismissing it? Does this make me INSANE?
Anyway so last night my friends and I went to a yakitori place by St. Marks and deep fried pork cartilage was on the menu. Obviously, I had to try it. And if you're super curious, you could try it as well. But you can probably pass. It was really pork skin and cartilage together and the problem was cartilage has no flavor, only texture (if you could call it that). Crunchy was the best way to describe it. If it came with a dipping sauce it might have tasted better.

One of the St. Mark's place izakayas also offers bull pizzle/penis. Will you eat it? I'll pay. =P
Having said that, I won't eat bugs. I can't get over it, and it annoys me to no end that I can't even get over it long enough to try it, but there it is. If I were in a country where it was widely accepted and legal, I would probably try dog just to try it. I'm a dog owner and my dog is my baby, but I would still try it just because to me, there must be a reason people eat it and some people dream about it. *shrug*

Pat,
I cannot read man. What do you want from me?!
Yvo,
My friends have pictures of eating that. They seemed to have been quite happy... And I'd like to think I'd be open minded enough to try dog, but just not sure...

I'm going to Macchu Picchu next year (most likely) and I have decided that I will eat guinea pig while there. It's something fairly commonly eaten there, so I figure why not? I had fried lamb brain in Turkey...
As for dog, it doesn't hurt my belief that I will try it - because I don't think it's eaten widely in any country except Korea (though I COULD BE WRONG) and it doesn't seem likely I will make it to Korea anytime soon. Also, according to a certain someone close to me who has eaten it before (and thinks it was nothing special), dog is bred there to be eaten, much like we breed cows. I've always felt like it's a matter of perspective; in India, where the cow is considered a sacred animal, we must seem barbaric for our rampant consumption of said animal. In America, where dogs are bred and kept as pets, companions, part of the family, we deem those outside of it who choose to raise them as livestock, barbaric and inhuman for eating Fido or Fluffy, when they are not eating pets. Also, I've been told the "dog" they eat is closer to dingo than any we have as pets here. That helps ease my mind as well. :)
