American posts on Food in Mouth
We went to check out the new-ish Whitney Museum by the Meatpacking District the other week. The weather was gorgeous and you could see the Freedom Tower in the skyline very easily. You wouldn’t think a view from a balcony could make you feel small, but somehow at street level it’s often harder to understand the scope of everything; New York moves so fast, with energy levels so high around you, it’s often too easy to think all of it is normal. We didn’t dine at Untitled and given that they’re in the news this week for altering their business strategy as it pertains to tipping, it would have been great to post about that. But we didn’t eat there and ended up with a fried chicken sandwich from Mighty Quinn’s…. [Continue reading]

Apparently New York City will get a Chick-Fil-a at some point in 2015, around the Bryant Park area by 6th ave. It kind of bugs me that such tasty chicken sandwiches go on to make some despicably religious conservatives uber rich. Seriously, look up the net worth of S Truett Cathy before his passing, and he was a billionaire. AMNY said that when it opened in Chicago, its mayor voiced disapproval, I assume because of what their CEO tweeted in 2012. But you know what, in the Chicago location we saw… it was packed. As much as McDonalds cornered the burger market, they never seemed to really win in the chicken sandwich niche…. [Continue reading]

With a target graduation date of May 2016, and a self imposed deadline to make things work, I have already struck out in my first attempt to find something that’ll be sustainable in New York. Apparently tech companies really like them uber nerds. To comfort myself in my absolute average skill level, a burger felt necessary. Not just any burger though, because I prefer writing about burgers that I have totally forgotten about from two months ago. Wifey and I were down by DUMBO and Shake Shack had one of those limited edition things that’s not on the regular menu. It was basically a cheese burger with fried onions on top… [Continue reading]

At some point in my tenure in New York, I had a college degree, and voluntarily quit a full-time job from a company that was two acquisitions away from being bought by Google. I had two roommates in a railroad apartment, and my room had no windows. I remember it was around summer time, and I went to the July 4th hot dog eating contest on Coney Island for the first time ever. It was balls hot that year, maybe above 90. After that, I went home and sat alone in this living room and wondered when I had to move out of the city. My idea was to buy a one way ticket to Portland and then rent some small room, buy a scooter, and then… figure it out. What I would have missed out on would have been epic, but in a smaller sense, I would have missed out on things like getting Chicken and Waffle with Ming on a Sunday…. [Continue reading]

We lived in Washington Heights for three years. While there are nice things about any neighborhood, I remember the neighbor who blasts his video games and movies at 3 or 4 am on weeknights. Our last night in Washington Heights, merengue music pounded through our window like someone really wanted to test the limits of his or her stereo. It started around 3am and only ended shortly before 5am. Dog shit on the ground was common. Cat calls were common. Maybe really liberal folks think loitering is fine, but those liberals probably live in nicer areas. Loitering is not fine. Moving back to Brooklyn was for sanity, just look at what’s involved. That mansplaination brings me to the very real idea that you can find these pockets of New York City where you feel like there’s an oasis away from the hustle and bustle. Those pockets are… yuppier. Food used to transplant me away from this city on a regular basis, now a little less so. Still, what never fails is a burger from Shake Shack. That makes me forget…. [Continue reading]
