State of the Union was given by the greatest president of my lifetime (so far), and I suppose it makes sense to take stock of my own situation and see what’s up with the blog. Picture quality is at an all-time high because I have taken steps to only use pictures that look good enough, even if it doesn’t match the words on the page. Irrelevant coverage is at an all-time high because I just write about anything on my mind even if it has nothing to do with food. Traffic is at an all-time low because all my readers left. When we went to Laduree, it seemed like a scene… You have your tourist mothers showing their little girls what a nice thing tea time is… you have your female girlfriends that are on vacation… you have your female Asian groupies… you have your stereotypical Soho type of crowd… We even saw someone who’s been on reality tv before. See I’ve come to terms with the idea that you’re just going to have levels of restaurants that serve this demographic and there’s nothing I can do about it. Complaining about $16 dollar omelets that come with no sides is pointless. If I want to eat brunch with a side dish, I can move to a different city. But there’s a way to order the cheapest thing on the menu at Laduree and actually be really satisfied…. [Continue reading]

You know that saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it?” That’s a common way of thinking when computer folks think about updating their servers and shit. Object A depends on Object B, why update B when it might fuck up A. You gotta test it in a test environment first before trying it in production, but then do you have time to do that when you have deliverables. Blah blah, FUCKING blah. However, it is a theory I take to heart when it comes to my wardrobe. What do I mean? “This hoodie has been in production for five years, why do I need to get a new one?” That’s almost verbatim to wifey, the other night. A new hoodie, but whyyyyyy? The old one just works. Anyway, I’m losing the new hoodie battle, but trying new things is totally cool when it comes to food. A few weekends ago we were in Providence looking for some breakfast/brunch food. And since it’s a small-ish city, I figured yelp would be as good of a site as any to find out where to go. The Fat Radish is a restaurant that basically I haven no idea that it exists, yet it’s over three-years-old and has a friggin New York Times star. If we’re in the game of making new neighborhoods that never existed before, I would call it East Chinatown, but really it’s like Lower East Side. That is part of the reason that I would never usually go because I wouldn’t think there’s that many restaurants over there. Also the place is like, for people who seem to be pretty and shit. Can someone tell me which category of food has had less innovation in the last fifty years? Is it brunch or Chinese food? Chinese food hasn’t changed much but actually I think brunch has changed even less. When I look at the quotes from high level reviews on my restaurant page for The Elm, it would seem like you’d find amazing food at The Elm. Just do yourself a favor and don’t expect that at brunch. Not to pick on Paul Liebrandt, but it’s really a symptom of brunch everywhere. What differentiates a more luxurious brunch from something at Denny’s is just the ingredients and the skill level of the preparer. So if it’s Sullivan County Farms Egg tagged along with Benton’s Bacon, then your average breakfast sandwich is thus elevated to the $15 per sandwich stratosphere. Was it good? Yes.
