Chelsea posts on Food in Mouth

The magical carpet ride of living in New York City for wife and me will end in the summer of 2016. We’ve decided that after graduate school, the only thing that’s going to keep wifey and me here in New York is finding the dream job. Or the way I like to phrase it to people around me is, “If I can somehow trick Google or Facebook into hiring me, then it’s doable to stay in New York.” It would seem that those companies don’t let too many through the cracks. And it doesn’t have to be those two as long as it’s a good tech company. I’m not a betting man, but the odds for leaving are good…. [Continue reading]

We ate at Montmartre when the weather was still sunny. They have this back yard area that takes you away to another place that’s almost a dream except it’s either full of yuppies or hipsters. These days I can’t tell them apart because even the hipsters have money or maybe it’s just that yuppies have gotten better wardrobe. But all the customers who visit Montmarte on that summer weekend day had the same idea because absolutely NO ONE sat in the dining room. It’s that thing where you feel like you’re at a neighborhood place where the servers are super friendly and the drinks extra strong. However I don’t eat at any single place enough to become a regular and spending money on alcohol just means it’s not being spent on food. I will say that it’s a shame they changed chefs because the food we had at brunch that day was pretty good, at least my dish was. Steph got a salad and I went with fried chicken…. [Continue reading]

You can get high quality BBQ brisket on The Highline now. This is what’s awesome about New York. There’s good food everywhere if you want to pay for it. I don’t remember exactly the price of the brisket platter from Brisket Town, but it was in the $10 to $12 range I think. They accept credit card though, so at least you ain’t gotta worry about cash…. Do we pause more when confronted by a redneck or do we pause more when confronted with fried chicken? It’s close. In the wake of the terrible school shooting, I find that not enough liberals are talking about why the 2nd amendment is stupid. For many Republicans, they like to say that the free market always works. A good idea? The free market will make it spread like wild fire. This works for fried chicken too. Good recipe that’s out there publicly? You can be damn sure lotta people be eating the good shit. Copycat actions tell us a lot. So it’s strange that when legislators world wide are copying constitutions, they have stopped copying the United State’s. They like Canada’s. This fervor for gun rights to be in a country’s constitution? Most industrialized nations don’t have this. New countries or new charters don’t want that either. Gun ownership is like that time I tried to make tequila sauce. It’s nasty. No one likes it. But there we are, trying to tiptoe around the gun issue so we don’t piss off Republicans. This is not a mental health issue. There are crazy people and mental health issues world wide. This is a gun issue. Everyone need to get that. Every country in the world has a mental health issue, but we’re the country with that AND a gun issue. People need to get that straight. We talking about this cuz there are twenty dead kids, not because prozac ain’t widespread enough. Bitches please…. [Continue reading]

Legends was a big deal when it was unearthed. On 7th avenue in the mid-teens was not and still isn’t an area where you hope to find serious food. The fact that the menu also contained a lengthy boasted over twenty different Vietnamese dish would have suggested that Legends Bar and Restaurant would be a confused Asian dining establishment. It seemed like the food version of an Asian son or daughter that didn’t do medicine or law. In a place unsettled with its identity, good Sichuan food can be had. Food good enough to appeal to either aisle of the authenticity debate. There’s good Chinese food in Legends, although the portions would never succumb to any Bloomberg overlording like the soda ‘ban’. It should be safe to say by now that Sichuan or Szechuan food in New York City right now is experiencing the same type of momentum that the Neapolitan pizza movement gained in recent years. The season is more ripe for fallen leaves than blossoming flowers, but there’s a Sichuan Spring going on in this fantabulous city of ours, and you can just test the waters with an inexpensive lunch special….
