Chinese posts on Food in Mouth

Last month, one of my favorite podcasts, Planet Money, came out with a story about how and why women computer science majors are so few compared to men, and compared to other sciences or med/law school. It’s a super interesting story so I encourage you all to listen to it, but my response to that is… those women who otherwise would have been CS majors… y’all are lucky you’re in something else more interesting. I think in 2014, there’s this craze that, “OMG, all these white guys are becoming million or billionaires but what’s the minority count in Silicon Valley or where are the women?&quo; The truth is, the ones who strike it rich in Silicon Valley are the 1% of computer science majors. I don’t say 1% as in how their net worth is compared to the rest of the CS majors, eve though that applies. I’m talking about the pure number of CS majors there are in the United States and what percentage of them end up at a startup and end up in the seven figures and above net worth. It’s just not that common. What is common? Being an average CS major with a job. I can tell you about that. It’s boring. And no fun. So those women that missed out on being a CS major? This week The New York Times reviewed Telepan Local and seemed underwhelmed by the style of food (tapas) and the quality of the food itself. They also covered how bread service is missing from many restaurants. I think the problem here is that individuals hold onto ideas of what we’re used to, and those things are comforting. American restaurant that doesn’t do appetizers and entrees, but instead serves small un-filling plates? Un-American. Bread that may or may not come and may or may not be free? Outrage! But I think it’s simply that restaurants get bored offering only what customers want, therefore they innovate. There are dim sum places in New York like Red Egg where you don’t get the push cart experience. The quality of the food is on par with what you’d get at a Jing Fong and some would say it’s even slightly better. Crazy as that might sound, there’s a reason that some folks held out with a Blackberry phone because feeling those keys was just nice. Seeing what you can eat just two minutes prior to eating it is kinda fun. People do seem to wait a crazy amount of time on Sundays to get into a large dim sum place, while places like Red Egg aren’t nearly as packed…. [Continue reading]

Since we’re continuing on with the month of no public haterade (plenty of in-person haterade still, just ask wifey and friends), I’m going to talk about one of the good things about getting older. Normally I’d just complain about lower back pain and my achey knees. So the number one thing about getting older is that you run out of time. There’s a reason people have mid-life crisis and shit like that. The flip side of that is it’s really nice to just realize it’s cool to spend time with wifey or friends/family. Nice things you can do? Relax and eat dessert at Asian dessert spots in Chinatown. InDessert is a nice spot for that. A quick detour from the vacation posts. To give you an idea just how damn slow I am, those vacation posts are nearly seven months old. At the current rate, I won’t finish til it’s been a full year since the vacation. But a break is necessary sometimes. Every year around the first few months of the year, I beseech for my market value on the job market. Just like the last few years, it has been a sobering and humbling experience to realize just how dire I might feel if layoffs ever come. Apparently I’m not very employable, but at least I have a job now, right? Excuse me while I look for some wood… As I was saying though, we all need a break. If you take one in Chinatown, you can confidently try the Portuguese egg tart at Simply Bakery. They make both kinds of egg tarts but really, the ones emblazoned with burn marks are the ones you want anyway…. [Continue reading]
