East-village posts on Food in Mouth

Along with school, I’ve started to look for new work opportunities, and that has also cut down on my free time. For those who have security at their jobs or those who haven’t looked for work in a while, or for those who are great at what they do, there’s this underlying thing about a career that those people just don’t know. There’s a secret, but I’ll get to that later. The secret to eating well during the hours when the sun is out on the weekend in NYC is to skip those brunch thingies. Yes brunch can be good. While there are good options, often times there are still better options, better strategies. A great alternative is to go eat pizza. In particular, go eat the Grandma (pizza) Pie at GG’s Pizza in the East I illage…. [Continue reading]

Last month, one of my favorite podcasts, Planet Money, came out with a story about how and why women computer science majors are so few compared to men, and compared to other sciences or med/law school. It’s a super interesting story so I encourage you all to listen to it, but my response to that is… those women who otherwise would have been CS majors… y’all are lucky you’re in something else more interesting. I think in 2014, there’s this craze that, “OMG, all these white guys are becoming million or billionaires but what’s the minority count in Silicon Valley or where are the women?&quo; The truth is, the ones who strike it rich in Silicon Valley are the 1% of computer science majors. I don’t say 1% as in how their net worth is compared to the rest of the CS majors, eve though that applies. I’m talking about the pure number of CS majors there are in the United States and what percentage of them end up at a startup and end up in the seven figures and above net worth. It’s just not that common. What is common? Being an average CS major with a job. I can tell you about that. It’s boring. And no fun. So those women that missed out on being a CS major? Y’all ain’t missing shit. While we’re on the 1%, let’s talk about the 1% of dumplings in NYC. They’re at Mimi Cheng’s Dumplings…. [Continue reading]

Recently I’ve begun to religiously watch The Daily Show and Colbert Report. Some folks say they watch every night but maybe one night you’re tired or there’s something else on Netflix and you skip that night. But I download them and watch it on the commute, so I really do watch every single episode… for the last four months. And the take away from that is that Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert do a fairly good facsimile of what ‘real news’ covers. I supplement my Comedy Central consumption with headline scanning from The New York Times, and if something really big breaks, at least someone will mention it on Twitter. That makes me wonder how informed does one really need to be? And since that’s the stance I take on hard news, my view on food news is even less stringent. I used to read grubstreet and eater daily! Multiple times a day! Now I barely read them multiple times a week! So yea, Narcissa seemed as good of a place to eat brunch a few weeks ago because I no longer need to stay on top of food news? NYTimes reviewed it five months ago? That’s recent enough for me!… [Continue reading]

With Fall approaching, the weather is getting more to my liking, except one tiny thing. With mid 70 degree weather, you would think that mosquitos wouldn’t be a problem. But I got like ten bites all over me because you get a nice breeze with the window open at night. No, we don’t have a mosquito screen because how many apartments come with that in New York? Oddly, Steph is unharmed by blood thirsty mosquitos and it seems like they all love that sweet blood I got. When they say you should be there for your wife and to protect her, is this what they mean? What happened to sharing?!? So a few weeks ago I went to try the Filipino restaurant, Jeepney with Ming. Their brunch menu was full of dishes that had meat in them, which made me happy…. A couple of weekends ago my sis landed a new job and to celebrate she organized this karaoke session in k-town. I drank way more than my old ass body could handle, which was pretty much just two beers. Apparently urban dictionary calls dudes like me, “Two beer qu**r” But the day after Steph and I went to get some gut filling food because I needed it. We picked Bar Primi in the East Village because they have large windows in the front which meant natural light was possible, and it’s new-ish so it seem to qualify on my list of places to go. One nice thing about Bar Primi was that they don’t give you bread in the beginning to ruin your appetite. They pull the same move as Otto and give you these thin breadsticks…. [Continue reading]
