Hong kong posts on Food in Mouth
After our nice stay in Taipei, we had a travel day that was nearly twenty-four hours long. We flew out of TPE early one morning and waited for a transfer at HKG airport. And if there’s one thing that’s awesome about airports in Asia, it’s the food. There are three major problems with most airports in America (from a consumer point of view): One, all these damn airports are old and dingy. Two, there’s never free wifi for the most part. Three, the food options are pretty dismal and/or super expensive. After Singapore and Hong Kong, I can say that the major airports in Asia don’t have any of those problems. The best part has to be the food though… At the Hong Kong airport, the food options are pretty awesome. We decided to get some dim sum…. [Continue reading]

Our last day in Hong Kong was mostly spent going to see this giant Buddha thing they got on this neighboring island. After seeing it, we were back on HK island and we stopped by another Tai Cheong Bakery. We got some more egg tarts of course but I also wanted to try the Century Egg pastry thingy they got…. When it comes to voting in the US, there are three main categories of folks. The first are the ones that never vote. Then there are ones who only vote in the presidential election. Lastly there are those who care so much they vote in the primaries and in the mid-term elections. I’m mostly in the second group, which is why the current Democratic primary race for the NYC mayoral race is kind of like picking restaurants in an unfamiliar city. There’s probably good options in there, but you just don’t have time to know sometimes. A few doors down from Australian Dairy Co. was a branch of Mak’s Noodles. Mak’s is one of those places that got popular a while back and now there are multiple locations and menus that come with pictures. They’re known for wonton noodles but since I grew up in Taiwan as a kid, my noodle preferences veer towards noodles which are ‘Q’. Man, someone needs to invent a better word for that… but seeing as most of the noodles one could find in Hong Kong are always thin and remind me of hard thread. I suppose some shops do noodles better than others but the main attraction for me were the wontons…. [Continue reading]

If there was a theme in Hong Kong, it was that if we tried a type of restaurant, then we were going to try that type multiple times. Last time on the blog, it was Hokkaido Dairy Company Well, we went to try the other one… Australian Dairy Company. Apparently the egg sandwich for breakfast is what’s popular, but also they do a custard. We tried it one night as part one of a dinner…. [Continue reading]

When I think about how much effort I’ve put forth in life, the period that contained the most effort was high school because it seemed like college was supposed to be this magical thing. Higher education was supposed to be better than baby unicorns. To some degree, I bet restaurants get that sense that when they’re just starting out, it’s important to hit the high notes. You gotta hand it to those restaurants who keep a high level year after year. In 2012, One Dim Sum in Hong Kong got a Michelin star, which meant that in 2012, there were TWO one star dim sum restaurants. Sadly that star got reduced and in 2013 they are merely Bib Gourmand. But it’s still worth checking out because it’s another dim sum restaurant that serves up exceptional food at really excellent price points. Basically when food is good and cheap, it’s easier to enjoy yourself. And since these busy dim sum restaurants do not have reservations, it democratizes the system so only those who want to wait will eat there…. [Continue reading]
