Midtown posts on Food in Mouth

New York might be a ramen slurp worthy town according to Pete Wells, although in reality I think what New Yorkers really like are bold flavors. When people talk about Japanese food, it’s always about how simple and elegant it is. With ramen, that probably would be the shio and shoyu style of ramen. And yet in the top ten for NYTimes, it’s full of spicy, miso, tonkatsu, or even green curry ramen. About as subtle as Letterman’s retirement announcement. But in the top ten, only two are either shio or shoyu ramen. And while he has Ivan’s Slurp Shop number two, it seems like if you talk to a normal person who’s not like, ‘OMG I just love the subtlety of good sushi for $300 per person,’ it seems like tonkatsu or even green curry broth is leading the way…. Marea by Central Park South is a great option if you want to try something fancy for lunch without breaking your budget. Of course Marea is an Italian restaurant so you have to be in the mood for that. As far as whether it’s a deal… they have a ‘business lunch’ which is $45 and gives you two courses. The five course seafood tasting menu is $80. For a very classy restaurant that has fairly good star ratings, this is probably a fair price. I like to think of two course for $45 as paying $30 for an entree or a ‘secondo’, while your appetizer is $15. While not super affordable I think for the type of restaurant that Marea strives to be, it’s a doable deal that those who love eating should try at some point. We went with the five course tasting because we were treating ourselves a few months ago as a Christmas gift. That’s how long my blogging backlog is…… [Continue reading]

Apparently America really knows how to make cars, according to this commercial. But while American might be good at building metal coffins, this great country does lack the legacy of having deeply root traditions in desserts. American desserts seems to be mostly a two headed monster, with one being cookies and the other being pies. French desserts seem to have a longer history and a world of variety that is more interesting than switching one one flavor of Nestle morsels for another or substituting apples for blueberries in a pie…. The pull to leave New York City is as fragrant as the smell of fresh bread from Betony. For a change, it was nice that it was something freshly baked that filled my lungs instead of whatever smell happens to permeate the blue line. We went for lunch, for celebration that we had a week of hawk eye budgeting, and the reward was a nice lunch for two. Uppies, with the Y leftover to the generation behind us, we enjoyed the way luxury preparation could be had for $38 on a weekday lunch. That price buys an appetizer and entree, and my appetizer was chicken liver mousse with apple, caraway and celery. The chicken liver mousse came disguised in a green ball, but upon slicing, the seductive rouge of the interior was a surprise. Funky and smooth, it was a little Manu Ginobli to start the meal…. My theory on movies is that if an individual sees him or herself as the protagonist, then that individual would like the movie. Similarly, I should want to pull for the hamburgers at Clarke’s Standard. In a city dominated by Shake Shack, I should love the underdog, the benchwarmer, and the guy stuck in the middle and can’t make the playoffs. But as I’m finding out in life, employment, and in the world of burgers… being in the middle is just fucking disappointing. I think if you’re super into thick beefy patties, then you might be partial to Clarke’s Standard. But I don’t think they represent anything special in terms of taste or price/value….
