On Restaurants, Dining, Streetfood, and a truthy voice on food blogging

At some point in my tenure in New York, I had a college degree, and voluntarily quit a full-time job from a company that was two acquisitions away from being bought by Google. I had two roommates in a railroad apartment, and my room had no windows. I remember it was around summer time, and I went to the July 4th hot dog eating contest on Coney Island for the first time ever. It was balls hot that year, maybe above 90. After that, I went home and sat alone in this living room and wondered when I had to move out of the city. My idea was to buy a one way ticket to Portland and then rent some small room, buy a scooter, and then… figure it out. What I would have missed out on would have been epic, but in a smaller sense, I would have missed out on things like getting Chicken and Waffle with Ming on a Sunday…. [Continue reading]

Apparently I’m a dumbass because I found a way to fuck up my camera and/or lens. I’m not sure what’s wrong with it right now and can’t really figure it out because I can’t find my 50mm lens since the move. Genius, I know. Will have to either find my 50 or figure out a new workflow by sharing wifey’s camera. Go figure. I also have been testing the waters on staying in NYC. Here are my findings:… [Continue reading]

We wait forever for the thing to come and save us. A lottery ticket, a Modern Love column that actually ends in love, and of course, summer in New York City. There’s a restaurant in the city that tries to invoke the idea of summer all year long. That restaurant is Santina. It makes absolute sense to have endless summer because it’s the season that makes New York come alive. We were able to walk in and eat at the bar on a week day, which is probably the best time to try hard-to-get-into restaurants like this one…. [Continue reading]

One of the more sobering moments recently was when I applied for one place online at 7pm for a job, and by 10pm, their automated system had already read through my resume and said ‘No thanks.’ How loud does the gong for moving need to be? But there are things that I’ll miss for sure because other U.S. cities won’t have anything approaching what’s at Arcade Bakery in downtown Manhattan. Hell, most bakeries in New York aren’t up to the same standards when you taste their croissants. Other bakeries do other things well but for obvious reasons, French baked goods rate higher on my radar…. [Continue reading]

We were in Detroit the other day, looking for a restaurant for lunch. Many individuals do this countless times throughout the year. Yet, when I do it, it’s a relentless search for the hippest food offerings possible. Wifey said that even of we might leave New York, the way we go about things, even as simple as where to eat for lunch, we do it like New Yorkers…. [Continue reading]
