On Restaurants, Dining, Streetfood, and a truthy voice on food blogging
Apparently New York City will get a Chick-Fil-a at some point in 2015, around the Bryant Park area by 6th ave. It kind of bugs me that such tasty chicken sandwiches go on to make some despicably religious conservatives uber rich. Seriously, look up the net worth of S Truett Cathy before his passing, and he was a billionaire. AMNY said that when it opened in Chicago, its mayor voiced disapproval, I assume because of what their CEO tweeted in 2012. But you know what, in the Chicago location we saw… it was packed. As much as McDonalds cornered the burger market, they never seemed to really win in the chicken sandwich niche…. [Continue reading]

For the food obsessed, one of the selling points of New York City is that you could find a wide variety of food items, and if the concentration of that ethnic group is high enough, then you could find something awesome. Yes, yes, yes, the food cognizenti stopped liking to say there’s such a thing as ‘ethnic’ food because all food is ethnic. Whatever. It’s easy to find a fucking Applebees in Ohio, so you tell me what the hell ‘American (new)’ is supposed to be. But Chicago has a lot of what you can find in New York. Maybe there aren’t ten great ramen places, but there’s at least one. There might not be ten casual places serving top notch lunch fare, but Avec just started seving lunch! It’s a popular place in Chicago that had only done dinner service, and didn’t take reservations…. [Continue reading]

Wifey and I went to Chicago earlier this summer to scope out the city before perhaps moving there next summer. It’s probably like my fifth time to Chicago and all this time, I had never tried an Italian beef sandwich. There are multiple options in Chicago (view with Javascript turned off to skip their pay wall), and Portillo’s is a good enough approximation of this iconic Chicago favorite. While I was at it, I also stuffed my face with a Chicago-style hot dog, because might as well!… [Continue reading]

When I think about leaving New York, there are suburbs that seem unsustainable simply because it just reminds me of the versions I saw as a youth. That’s not to say they were bad, but simply that when you see one cookie cutter suburb in the United States, you’ve seen them all. But you can still find home in one of these places, and I do every time when I stop by my parents place. Usually there’s at least one meal where my mom goes all out and cooks things that aren’t everyday meals, but things that are a little bit more time consuming or with special ingredients…. With a target graduation date of May 2016, and a self imposed deadline to make things work, I have already struck out in my first attempt to find something that’ll be sustainable in New York. Apparently tech companies really like them uber nerds. To comfort myself in my absolute average skill level, a burger felt necessary. Not just any burger though, because I prefer writing about burgers that I have totally forgotten about from two months ago. Wifey and I were down by DUMBO and Shake Shack had one of those limited edition things that’s not on the regular menu. It was basically a cheese burger with fried onions on top… [Continue reading]
