Queens posts on Food in Mouth

M Wells Dinette is a example of a great restaurant that’s been open for a year and a half that doesn’t get the hype that new restaurants get. Sure, due to the cycle of hysteria, they also got the attention early on and probably aren’t desperate for attention now, but I think it’s a good example of a place that’s doing great food perhaps beneath the constant search for the next great plate of food. And for a lazy food blogger like me, it’s nice that a year and half old restaurant is new to me…. [Continue reading]

With all the posts about food in Taipei, I figure it’s also good to mention that you can find some of those things here in New York too. Having already talked about various shaved ices in the mothership, like the shaved ice we tried at Shilin Night Market or the more mango-y shaved ice in the basement of Taipei 101, one food dish that I definitely enjoy having around NYC is shaved ice. One of the cuisines that I don’t eat much of but happen to really enjoy is Malaysian food. The New York Times recommended a Malay option this past summer. Steph and I thought it would be an interesting restaurant to try since we usually hit up the same spots while in Queens. I wonder if there are people out there that grow up on eating dim sum by ordering it from a menu. Cuz you know how they say the way you grew up eating certain things is how you think it should be. Like pizza or burgers. Most of the time, dim sum comes in these carts where they roll around and you pick and choose what you want. In the minority, there are restaurants where the items are to be ordered and then they’re brought out to you. Sunway is such a place in Flushing Queens. Not purely a dim sum restaurant, Sunway seems to be a casual place that happens to have decent dim sum on the menu as well…. [Continue reading]

In the New World Mall in Flushing Queens there is a stall that does Taiwanese food. I actually don’t get excited about Taiwanese food any more the way I used to. Now I care more about the price-to-value ratio of the food. Spending $4.50 in Metrocard fare can get you access to some Taiwanese sausages that probably are very difficult to find in Manhattan. Sure you can get pork buns in the city, but grilled sausages are a different matter. If the gua bao is Taiwan’s hamburger, then the glutinous rice sausage is like cornbread. Taiwanese yes, but not the most obvious thing that comes to mind…. [Continue reading]
