Ramen posts on Food in Mouth

Ramen posts on Food in Mouth

When I was young, when women shook their asses, we just drooled and said that women were shaking their asses. Apparently all along the word for it was ‘twerking‘. Basically as I go along in life, there’s always the unknown that surrounds me, and from that I try to distill what is need-to-know. But there’s obviously things I don’t even care to know. It’s like I’m sure uber successful folks aren’t caught up on Breaking Bad and reading Alan Sepinwall’s recap in hitfix and Andy Greenwald’s on Grantland. Successful (non-entertainment) people aren’t so into being a TV consumer that they need that. To that end, there was an article on food republic with Ivan Orkin about ramen. Main takeaway from the interview is that he thinks the ramen scene in New York is still in its infancy and that it doesn’t have a Japanese flavor to it. And I think most consumers would say, “I believe you and that’s fine for now. I’ll take the classics.”… [Continue reading]

My sister told me not to be lazy with these reviews. Unfortunately it’s impossible to be good all of the time, as hard as it is to believe. I will tell you that last month, I discovered that Santouka Ramen in the Mitsuwa Marketplace is super duper awesome during the week day for lunch. There’s like no wait and there are a ton of open seats. Ramen heaven…. [Continue reading]

Today we were just blessed by the news that the NRA really understands how to troll liberals. They got this game down good. I mean, what they pulled out today is like they combined Michael Jordan’s fade away with Kareem Abdul Jabbar’s sky hooks. It’s the ultimate weapon in chicanery. If only I could be so good at my job. It’s a gloomy start to the weekend before Christmas 2012. Aaaand the perfect food for such weather is of course ramen. I had walked by Ganso Ramen a few weeks before actually trying it, and balked at the idea of paying $15 for their most expensive bowl of ramen that featured short rib. Odd because they have other ramen on the menu like the Ganso for $12 or the Spicy Miso ramen for $13…. [Continue reading]

So yesterday I was at the gym playing basketball and there was this dude on my team, about 5’8, with horned rimmed glasses, short hair, and a blue Rangers shirt that said Lundquist on the back. Never seen him before. He said his name was ‘Ashwin’ or something like that. He was guarding this dude wearing an orange shirt, and every time the orange guy would beat him down the court for a fast break. This is bad on many counts because this gives orange dude lots of easy buckets and everyone else on the team sees orange down there and it’s like, ‘WTF?!’ I point this out to Ashwin. He doesn’t seem to get it after a few mentions. I break it down even further for him, because you know, even though basketball is an easy game, some people are really stupid despite this being a gym where theoretically you at least have get into NYU (an average institution). I told ‘Ashwin’ that he has one goal and it’s not scoring or whatever cuz we had a big dude on our team who was good, and his one goal was just to keep up with orange whenever he slips out for an outlet. And you know what ‘Ashwin’ said? He called me a faggot. So if anyone out there knows this ‘Ashwin’ person, try to get his ass fired so he can take his bigoted ass onto the unemployment line. There are a lot of words you use on the basketball court and usually the word is ‘asshole’ or ‘motherfucker’, neither of which crosses any lines. But maybe this is just me being old and NYU likes admitting bigots into the school now. What do I know? I do think that the older I get, the more grouchy I get about how things used to be. How food used to taste. How exciting it was before for eating. Let’s take Jin Ramen for example. A very respectable place for most neighborhoods (unless you live close to Ippudo). In the old days, I would get excited about shit like this, having decent (but not great) ramen semi-close to where I live. But the older I get, the less time I have. This is a theme I’m still exploring personally so all my blog will reflect this for the time being…. [Continue reading]

The only thing to write about now is stuff that happened a while ago. Pretty difficult to get around to write about new stuff… And I hate to be a Debbie Downer about food (ok not really, I love being an asshole), so I’ll write about a semi disappointing ramen experience at Tabata Noodle in Midtown. This new development was first covered by the always reliable Fork in the Road blog. They seemed to like this dish. My problem was that I’m not very good with words and the only black ramen I’ve had was black garlic ramen. So naturally I assumed too much and didn’t recognize that the word ‘sesame’ and ‘garlic’ are in fact two different things…. [Continue reading]
