Red hook posts on Food in Mouth

The long goodbye is always the hardest. And while school happens and time passes, we still have to find ways to pass the time, and to fill our bellies. One thing that I know for sure, no other city in America will have the variety in Thai cuisine or the number of choices for northern Thai just a bus ride away from home. Even though Chiang Mai in Red Hook is still seeking a permanent home, it seems to have already hit its stride…. [Continue reading]

The other day I met this kid who’s a junior in computer science at Hunter College. During the course of our conversation he asked where I had gone to school for undergrad and I mentioned NYU. His eyes widened and instantly he perked up and asked me how it was. It was as if he asked, “How is the Playboy Mansion?” Except all I thought was, “You code just as well as I do and I’m back in school. So… NYU == Hunter.” I never know how to answer when for the question of, “How was NYU?” It was a ripoff. Maybe next time I should say, “Well, it ain’t Columbia.” Part of me wants to believe that in a different city, maybe the question would be different. It’ll probably be the same. We went to eat barbecue the other day and it was good. BBQ is almost always the same in NYC now, and at a pretty high level. I think when I ask people about BBQ in other parts of the U.S., it’s like that kid asking me about school. We got it pretty good in NYC for barbecue…. [Continue reading]

Before starting on Taipei posts, I figure it’s good to pepper in some New York related posts of pictures I took in June… yea, four months ago. Now that it’s officially Fall, I get to say that the blog is now officially six-years-old. Seeing as I always come in first in a race of futility and that my blog has failed to really evolve in its long tenure, it seem only appropriate to grace the few readers who are left, to some pictures of awesome food from the Red Hook Ball Fields. The area by the ball fields is pretty much an area where white folks only go if they’re going for food. Aside from the fact that Ikea is two long blocks away, the ball fields is like a heavenly mix of middle aged Latino dudes trying to relive soccer or baseball fantasy, and fatties like me…. Now that Obama is going to settle into his second term, I think it’s time to focus less about politics and go back to talk about food. I will say though, it’s quite a shame that Obama couldn’t come out and just say, “In the great history of the United States that spans over 235 years, we never had universal health care until I made it my priority. 4 more years, bitches.” Whatever, at least now we don’t have some joker talking about cutting out loopholes when the loopholes he enjoys for 13% income tax would never go away. Even though I’m happy to stick it to fiscal conservatives and hillbillies, there actually are serious matters going on in the world right now. Hurricane Sandy’s mess hasn’t been completely cleaned up and I think schools in Red Hook are just getting ready to open again. Before the storm hit, Steph and I hit up Baked in Red Hook area of Brooklyn. It was all nice and sunny back then and I hope they get back up and going soon…. [Continue reading]

Lately I’ve taken some pleasure in writing about personal shortcomings like how I tip terribly. It’s an on-going investigation really, as all good things in life are. Here’s a thought I have… standing at the Red Hook Ball Fields eating tacos or sitting down at a restaurant in Chinatown/Flushing… I wonder, “How many illegal immigrants are within one square mile of where I am right now?” Is it possible that every single Latino or Asian person around me either has a proper work/tourist visa, green card, or U.S. citizenship? And what does it say about me if I question these people around me? Who knows? The good news is that I don’t spend too much time thinking about it because the food usually provides such a great distration. A couple of weekends ago Steph and I went to get some tacos at the Red Hook Ball Fields and man… they were great. $3 dollars with tax included is a decent price. Sunset Park might still offer the best value, but for the ambiance and the summery setting of eating your tacos on the grass next to a soccer field… well, it’s worth it…. [Continue reading]
