Sandwiches posts on Food in Mouth
I’m glad that Luke’s Lobster has an outpost on the Upper West Side now. It’s much easier than going all the way to first ave in the village just to get a lobster roll. Convenience really goes a long way in how I choose to eat. Most of the time, I figure out what to do on the weekends first, then try to think about what to eat in the area. Usually that leaves me with nothing, since I can’t think fast enough and am too indecisive. Last month we were in the mood of something summery, and lobster rolls sounded like a good idea. I’m glad that there’s now affordable lobster rolls with Luke’s and Red Hook Lobster Pound in the city. In the past, you had to go to a seafood restaurant like Pearl’s or something, and get a M.P. lobster roll. That market price is usually around $30 dollars. At Luke’s in the UWS it’s $16. Continuing with the theme of Best of NYC, today let’s talk about a sandwich. The one in question is actually in Midtown Manhattan. You wouldn’t think that one of the best places to get a Cuban sandwich is close to Broadway and Times Square, oh but there it is. And they’re actually open only until 5 PM. It’s like they’re mostly aiming for the guy wanting to grab Cuban food on-the-go. Getting a Cuban from Margon can be a bit tricky. The restaurant is long and narrow. When you first walk into the restaurant during lunch hour, a guy to your left asks if you want a Cuban and how many you want. Their sandwiches are so popular during lunch that the guy just wants to take your order as soon as you get in the door. If you walk farther into the restaurant, you’ll find they have other options on the steam table, as well as some seats. Rejoice! The Knicks are going to be semi-relevant again! News came late last night that Carmelo Anthony is getting traded to the Knickerbockers. This means that you should go out and celebrate with something that’s as silky smooth as his j-train (thank you, NBA commercial). You wouldn’t think beef is something that might be silky smooth, oh but you be wrong. Check your preconceived notions about roast beef at the door when you visit Bowery Beef. Social media apparently can flatten the world. Ideas can reach across oceans and topple dictators and revoke a constitution so that an army could rule a country. Hurray for Egypt! I think? You know what social media is not doing for me though? It’s not giving me cheaper sandwiches. Goddamn it! Where is Zucks when you need him? Apparently this place, Tiny’s Giant Sandwich Shop, is supposed to have awesome sandwiches. For $9 dollars. Sheesh, that’s just like nine dollar sandwiches from No. 7 Sub. No. 7 Sub offers a cilantro chicken on the menu right now. The price hasn’t changed therefore my opinion on the subject hasn’t changed either. Eating a $9 sandwich makes me feel good. Like, “Wow, the chicken that’s currently in my mouth, it used to be happy and alive. Now it’s just a dead motherfucker swirling around and getting chomped by my teeth. Stupid chicken.” But for real, the sandwiches are good, although a few dollars too much. When I was a kid, the saying was, “You are what you eat.” As if that kind of a slogan would get fat kid like myself to worship napa cabbages instead of bacon sandwiches. As an adult, now mostly I feel like you are defined by what you eat. It’s not like if I eat macaroni and cheese along with apple pie, then I would be an American. Or if I went to a Jewish deli everyday, that would make me a Jew. No nothing like that. But the idea that when I look around at the folks in No. 7 Sub… I just don’t see kindred spirits.
