Street food posts on Food in Mouth
I always wondered what kind of business food trucks do when the weather isn’t perfect. Usually during nice weather, I refuse to line up for Uncle Gussy’s. It don’t matter if they win Midtown Lunch streetmeatpalooza or if they’re all over the Vendy’s. I only get in line for shit on vacation. For example in Taipei I waited an hour to spend $3 dollars on breakfast of soy milk and fried crueller. So when it rains, it’s the perfect opportunity for me hit up a truck like Uncle Gussy’s…. Going on vacation really makes me appreciate how shitty going to work can be. Eating great food in Hong Kong makes me realize that perhaps the Asian food in New York is not like Asian food in Asia… but even in New York, there’s a varying scale to the quality of the Asian food you can get. Let’s take Thai food for example. On one hand, you can get kickass noodle dishes at Pok Pok Phat Thai. But on the other hand, there’s plenty of just adequate things like the Pad Siew I had from this Thai cart without a sign on 52nd st…. [Continue reading]

When it comes to street meat, most of the time you can leave unimpressed if you don’t know where you’re going. That’s why it’s a shame that tourists to New York City do not always go to the right one. You can never go wrong with The Halal Guys. Huge portions there and stacks up well to most traditional street meat carts. That’s why every year it’s good to keep an eye on Streetmeat Palooza by Midtown Lunch. I’m a pretty bad food blogger so I haven’t even eaten at last year’s winner because they have such a long line. I hate lines. So instead I went to the 6th place finisher, Gyro Express on the South west corner of 40th and Madison ave. Usually 6th place might suck unless it’s first grade soccer, but this is 6th out of 17th, so it’s solidly in the top third of the street meat that were sampled last year. And you know what? This shit is like tanning without a top on, no lines bitches…. [Continue reading]

Domo Taco gets a bad rap. Really, go look on their yelp page. Panned. Check out the coverage on Midtown Lunch, mixed reviews. I think there are a couple of things they are doing right with the tacos and some things that perhaps they can try to figure out better. Since their location varies day to day, you would have to check their twitter page to see where they are exactly. On the day I went, they were in Midtown by like 53rd and Madison…. [Continue reading]

I have a very consumer oriented (read: cheap) perspective when it comes to competitive pricing for street food. In particular, I think it’s always a good thing to analyze when a street food cart or truck updates their prices. For example, for carts that are bogged down by insane lines, I actually think it makes sense to increase the price. The price would push down demand, which alleviates the congestion for the wait and the pressure on your workers. The only easy way around that of course is to open more carts, and we’ve seen The Halal Guys open up multiple carts. They’re on the southeast corner of 53rd and 6th during the day, but there’s like another smaller cart on 7th and then another one on 52nd or something like that. Three places to get the same goods, and you can keep your prices the same because you’re just opening up the supply chain to meet the demand. When is a bad time to increase prices from a consumer point of view? After a good review is a terrible time to raise prices, because then the business is simply trying to be opportunistic. The only corollary to that is if the new review brings about such crazy business that they need higher prices to manage the queue better. But when there’s no line and you still up your prices after a good review? Well…. shiiiiiiiiiit. I can’t stand that. It happened to Rice the Great, the new cart that’s in front of the Time-Life Building on 50th…. [Continue reading]
