Taipei posts on Food in Mouth

After getting a delicious breakfast at Fu Hang, one of my uncles took Steph and me to this tourist attraction just outside of Taipei called Jiufen. It’s an area that’s on the side of a tiny mountain and there’s a little alley way that’s full of food and souvenir shops. It’s a pretty popular destination and luckily my uncle was able to drive us…. On the first day in Taipei, I was listing to my family what I remember about food. They asked me if I had any place in mind and I told me about a place that Nicholas said I should visit. Basically I told my cousin, I don’t know the name of this place but it’s like a dou jiang (soy milk) place that has no sign on the street level but people get in long lines for it. I don’t know which neighborhood it is in or what street it is on, but I know this magical place has ponies. Immediately he was like, ponies? Oh, that has to be Fu Hang. I was like damn, my family knows food the way Bo Knows. I love it. We waited til the last day to try it because I hate lines…. [Continue reading]

After eating some lu rou fan, we actually went to see more touristy things before eating again. That’s how we wound up at the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall. Here in the states we got founding fathers, but in Taiwan he’s like the one and only OG. So he’s the Founding Father. The one and only (who lost to the commies, just kidding). Big props in that Sun Yet Sen was into Democracy though. Let’s review: Democratic country, awesome food, single-payer national health care (think a UK-like system), and English on the metro. What a place! Mothership for the win. But after the memorial we went to Taipei 101…. [Continue reading]

As much help as it was to be guided around Taipei by my uncles and cousins, it was cool to be able to explore the capital of Taiwan for a day on our own. You know the thing about traveling is that humanity is pretty much awesome everywhere around the world, and I’m not sure why some go through the trouble to say the people in a certain place are really friendly. People everywhere are friendly, and Taiwanese people are no exception. What I think is more telling when I travel is the reality that the world caters to Americans. There’s just enough English to get you to where you want to go. Armed with the older version of google maps that still allowed you to download offline maps, and English names in the metro, we went around Taipei for a day for the best hits of sightseeing…. One of the things I learned when I went back to Taipei after nineteen years absence was that my moms still got lots of family there! My uncles and just everyone over there in general were super friendly to us and helped us with everything. I felt a bit guilty after the trip because I waited so long to go back. Sometimes you don’t need a reason to visit the mothership. Sometimes you should just go, and afterwards, realize it was calling and sending out a ‘come home’ signal the whole time. E.T. had it right, I did not. But my lack of awareness never is an excuse not to stuff my face with more food. A few hours after our awesome xiao long bao meal at Din Tai Fung, we had dinner with the family. It was at this place that used to just be a noodles and rice shop, but grew into a full scale restaurant. To order your food, you pick out what looks good in the display menu outside and they whip it up…. [Continue reading]
