Thai posts on Food in Mouth

The long goodbye is always the hardest. And while school happens and time passes, we still have to find ways to pass the time, and to fill our bellies. One thing that I know for sure, no other city in America will have the variety in Thai cuisine or the number of choices for northern Thai just a bus ride away from home. Even though Chiang Mai in Red Hook is still seeking a permanent home, it seems to have already hit its stride…. [Continue reading]

Of course even though I might sometimes tell strangers I don’t know Pok Pok, last month Steph and I made a repeat visit to Pok Pok NY on the Columbia Waterfront District. It’s definitely out of the way for most people because you have to walk or take a bus to the restaurant. This visit was to their newer location and it was across the street from their Whiskey Soda Lounge. On this visit I was reminded how much reading you have to do with the menu because man, there’s plenty of description to get across to learn about Isan Thai food. Being a dirty American, I can’t remember the last book I read, so there was definitely a little challenge to settle my brain to reading all the description about the food…. [Continue reading]

Recently Steph and I went back to try Pok Pok in Brooklyn almost a year after trying it for the first time last summer. But this story is not about that, because this is about Somtum Der in the East Village. Recently I spoke with someone who had gone to Brooklyn just twice in a decade. I go practically ever other weekend. I think that’s why it would be difficult to leave. Perhaps Pok Pok could be franchised like Chipotle or something, but New York is unique in that you have idiots who eat on the sidewalk just for the chance to either be seen or see other strangers. Meanwhile taxis drive by depositing pollution onto your food…. [Continue reading]

I hesitate to write about Pok Pok NY because I recently heard that there was some food event done by some antacid company and it was hosted there, but I’m too small time to be invited. Although reality was a bummer, I guess it will take persistence to finish all the backlog. Around the time when this blog was in its infancy, I had the chance to go to the ORIGINAL location of Pok Pok in Portland, Oregon. The food at Pok Pok in Oregon was pretty tasty too…. Going on vacation really makes me appreciate how shitty going to work can be. Eating great food in Hong Kong makes me realize that perhaps the Asian food in New York is not like Asian food in Asia… but even in New York, there’s a varying scale to the quality of the Asian food you can get. Let’s take Thai food for example. On one hand, you can get kickass noodle dishes at Pok Pok Phat Thai. But on the other hand, there’s plenty of just adequate things like the Pad Siew I had from this Thai cart without a sign on 52nd st…. [Continue reading]
