Ulysses Oyster Festival Review: Ulysses Oyster Festival

Ulysses Oyster Festival Review: Ulysses Oyster Festival

This past Saturday there was an oyster festival downtown by Stone St. I cannot recall any instances in the past where I consumed raw oysters, and this seemed like a good enough reason to give it a shot. Stone street was pretty packed by the time I had gotten there and the party was in full swing.

For $10 dollars, they gave you half a dozen oysters, although in my picture you can’t see the sixth one because it was so small it was hidden from view. Does that count as expensive or no? The line to get tickets and oysters moved fairly fast and it was only a few minutes before I sat down with my own plate. When I sat down on a bench, the woman a few feet away just said, “Oh I just love oysters!” She then demonstrated to her friends what happened when you squeezed lemon on a fresh oyster. (You can see the glee that’s on her face in one of the pictures).

You got a choice of a lot of different condiments to put on the oysters, but they really didn’t add anything to the picture. A little lemon and straight down was my preferred method. It doesn’t really taste like anything, which I suppose is good for seafood. If it smells bad then it’s no good. It was a little salty, but not too much. Texture was pretty predictable; soft and slippery.

They had teams of people shucking oysters at different tables. And they all wore this bright green shirt. They would knock on the bivalve a little bit in the beginning, then press down hard on it to keep it stable, then stuck the knife looking thingy in there and twist. Then the oyster opened up.

There were other food options there, and I remembered that the Amateur Gourmet and Ed Levine like Adrienne’s pizza. Well whaddaya know, they sold slices for three bucks a pop. Super expensive in terms of price per oz, but whatever, it’s way less than buying a whole pie myself. So I bought one. Pretty delicious and if I am ever on Stone Street again, I would try it out once more.
