One thing that’s nice about New York is that it’s possible to get restaurant-level desserts without going to a restaurant. Dominique Ansel Kitchen is one of those places where you can order dessert that’s made only after you order it. Prices are slightly higher but the portions increased to match, which is always a welcoming sight in the city. We tried two items even though it would be very filling, since using dessert as your main course on a weekend lunch is a good idea. I believe it’s FDA approved actually…. [Continue reading]

This past Saturday I tried to record a podcast with Jeremy and Ming. What I learned about podcasting is that it’s basically work. It requires a lot of planning. The same reason that my tiny food blog hasn’t taken off is probably the same reason I’ll never end up doing podcasts. First of all, you need some damn equipment because microphones apparently do not grow on trees. Then you have to be good at talking. I seriously cannot remember the last time I had a phone conversation longer than eight minutes with anyone other than wifey. You gotta know how to stay on topic and do research so you ask the right questions. I ain’t Edward R Murrow. What I am though, is a dude who likes shaved ice. We went after dinner at Bar Primi…. There are restaurants in New York City that have been packed for years and years, yet printed words (or even worthless food blogging words) hardly ever do them justice. Pack restaurants are usually loud and very much a scene as opposed to a quiet place with under-the-radar and excellent food. I had never gone to Mary’s Fish Camp before, but we went there for a group dinner this past summer. They don’t take reservations therefore we rushed a little after work to try and there there and dine without waiting. It was super full but luckily we only waited like ten minutes outside…. This week my friend Jeremy told me that his sister was visiting from Hawaii, and that she tried the Momofuku Pork Buns and was like “it’s just like pork buns in Chinatown.” In a way she’s right, it’s pretty much just a pork bun. I feel like iconic and memorable dishes like that are simple and delicious and just makes you think like it’s been around all this time. But the gua baos, if you can find them in Manhattan’s Chinatown (and I don’t think you can), are traditionally not as soft and luscious as the ones at Momofuku. You would think the brush of hoison has been done before but mostly I’ve seen it for duck buns. Then you think pickled cucumbers must have been done before, but generally in gua baos it’s pickled mustard greens. Minor changes here and there and it’s kind of a whole new product. If it’s so simple you wish you had come up with it, then it’s got potential to be a classic. I don’t think you find these kind of inventions when you eat out for brunch. And mostly I eat out for brunch! Chez Sardine may or may not have crazy good dishes on their normal dinner menu, but their brunch menu mostly speaks to regular brunch dishes you would find…. Big Gay Ice Cream is the place to go when it’s hot ass balls outside. When the weather report says 90 degrees but feels like 96, you know it’s time to get you some. The Bea Arthur cone is very much like an old lady; you can dress it up however you want but it’s white on the inside and It’s very soft. It’s vanilla soft serve with dulce de leche and crushed nilla wafers. Obviously it’s delicious. I think it’s like $5 bucks or something like that. That old floozy ain’t cheap…. [Continue reading]
