Junmen Ramen has a good bowl of noodles

One of the things that is really new about being a parent is the little things that make you geek out and have a positive reaction. I can imagine this is what life is like for people who love cosplay or bird watching. Before the baby, I remember there were times when I would feel proud over a lame-ass attempt at a recipe and Steph would lovingly tell me it's edible even if it was merely mediocre. Now, I realize that type of proud feeling pales in comparison to something like watching the baby do any little thing like, "He put his hands together!" And it sounds facetious but it really isn't. Just go google 'instagram baby' and you'll see parents love capturing moments of their baby. And all this time oogling our baby certainly makes any moment of eating out at a restaurant kind...

Store bought Taro Ice Cream

Seeing how as my blog is much less about food and more about whatever the fuck I want to talk about, I'd like to take a moment and say that it's quite unfair that Doogie Howser can be a doctor as a teenager, and go home and night and write something pithy in his DOS command-prompt journal. Meanwhile, I have no idea how to really look at my life. Thanks for giving me the inferiority complex, Neil Patrick Harris. But I try to fight on regardless of how 80's TV shows screwed me up forever. What really helps is to stuff my face with ice cream (to the dismay of both my wife and my mother). The other day in Detroit I saw this brand of ice cream called Magnolia's. They had both purple yam and taro, but we went with taro because it seemed...

Coco Review: Coco bubble tea and price discrimination

Last month there was word about a new bubble tea place in Midtown. Midtown Lunch uncovered the new chain in Midtown East. Apparently the chain is from Taiwan and the prices are right for midtown. Usually bubble tea in NYC is priced outrageously compared to what you might find in the bubble tea motherland of Taiwan. But if it's between $3 to $4 and it's not in Chinatown, that's as good as it gets. One can tell that Coco Bubble Tea is different just from some of items on the menu. I got the drink called 3 Guys. It has pudding, grass jelly, and tapioca or boba. Google tells me that bubble teas are fairly high in calories. Probably somewhere between 250 to 500 calories depending on size, sweetness, and amount and type of milk added. When you put pudding in there, it probably doesn't help...

How to make ramen at home

Making ramen at home is difficult. The difficulty level increases when I screw up the recipe in addition to being a complete newbie to this. Mostly I find this to be more along the lines of 'playing with food' rather than actual cooking. I got the recipe from Lucky Peach issue 1, which is not being sold anymore. You can find issue 2 on Amazon now. [Full disclosure: I add my affiliate code to amazon links.] The recipe is simple enough, and I'll talk about it in a minute, but it really isn't as easy as it seems. There's actually only three ingredients, which would lead one to believe it would be easy.. but it ain't easy unless you good at this shit, which I'm not. So let's get to it. The very first step in the recipe should be for you to bake baking soda....

DT Works Review: DT Works and sales tax

Dessert Truck is back, sorta. The geniuses behind serving up delicious desserts out of a truck for $5 dollars is back with a brick and mortar store after their truck got shut down. Of course we all never really know what happened with the truck...

Food in Mouth. NYC Restaurant Reviews. Dining. Streetfood.

I'm leaving New York. There are countless ways to say goodbye to the greatest city in the world and my limited elegance with words preclude me from writing something that matches my true feelings. I started this blog simply because I thought I could put up a few pictures and write some random words to go with it. What I got out of this blog was the love of my life and a son. You could say I got a great deal. Together we now set off for a place that isn't as tough to make it, and enjoy the family life with perhaps less stress...

Ikea Review: Ikea Princess Cake

I've been going to Ikea a lot lately because I'm moving to a different apartment. Don't worry, I'm not going far, and I'm still going to be here to write about food in New York and Brooklyn. Part of the fun of going to Ikea is visiting the cafeteria because that place is CHEAP. Honestly, I think it's even cheaper than Chinatown. It's really cheap as shit. What you see in the picture above? That cost $1.29 pre tax. Seriously! Where else are you going to get a deal like that? Who else sells Princess Cakes? What the hell is a Princess Cake? Let's find out! Now before we dive into what's actually in a Princess Cake, let's go over why kind of desserts I like. If it's either cheap or has chocolate or ice cream in it, then I'm sold. I think the reason I...

Joes Ginger Review: Joe's Ginger

After the the posts earlier this week, I had to cool down a little and take a mini-break from the pseudo-flame war that occurred. Weee. This blog is not supposed to get that serious! Obviously I cannot go eat at a Momofuku Ko everyday, but that is mostly because it is super hard to get a reservation with only a twelve seat restaurant. Most of the time I just eat in Chinatown because it is super cheap and simple. Chill, relaxing, and no drama...

Dear Chris Webber

Dear Chris Webber, This is an open letter to you, NBA baller, lover of steak sauce, and overall cool dude on NBA TV. I was highly amused by your interview on the Collin Cowherd show (mp3 link) on ESPN Radio yesterday. Apparently, you love steak sauce. I'm assuming you mean A1 steak sauce. I used to be a fan of steak sauce too, because quite frankly, it's really delicious. First though, I'm going to show my readers a part of the transcript where you describe the experience, and then you know, we'll get more into the debate about whether it's #sauce or #nosauce. (btw readers, if you download the podcast, forward to the 29th minute mark). Chris Webber: I was in a restaurant with my wife, OK. The restaurant was really nice. I ordered a steak. I ordered it well-done...
