On Restaurants, Dining, Streetfood, and a truthy voice on food blogging
The other day wifey and I woke up at 3 am and took the train into the city. Weather had not yet turned cold. It wasn’t the kind of wind that would dry out your skin. But waiting for a train at that time of the night, and then walking on the sidewalks of New York made me feel like a tourist, like some outsider. People walked around, ready to end their night at 4 am, not knowing where they had parked their cars. Maybe I’m the one who overstayed the welcome in New York. But one thing that always makes me feel right at home is some dim sum. It had been a long time since we had gone to Nom Wah Tea Parlor, and it seemed like a great time to go back…. [Continue reading]

Sometimes wifey and I have serious adult conversations, such as when she told me a child at school had lice and we might have to comb each other’s hair to look for the pesky lil shits. Oh and this conversation happened on texting so I responded with the hysterically crying emoji. See, adult conversations. But really sometimes we go over possible bad outcomes before we leave New York, such as me losing my job. (insert hysterically crying emojis…) When we talk about it, I always get the feeling of, “Why are we still here?” Truthfully this is a question I asked about a bowl of ramen in Brooklyn the other day. Like, it’s just average… why is it still here?… [Continue reading]

One thing that’s nice about New York is that it’s possible to get restaurant-level desserts without going to a restaurant. Dominique Ansel Kitchen is one of those places where you can order dessert that’s made only after you order it. Prices are slightly higher but the portions increased to match, which is always a welcoming sight in the city. We tried two items even though it would be very filling, since using dessert as your main course on a weekend lunch is a good idea. I believe it’s FDA approved actually…. [Continue reading]

We went to check out the new-ish Whitney Museum by the Meatpacking District the other week. The weather was gorgeous and you could see the Freedom Tower in the skyline very easily. You wouldn’t think a view from a balcony could make you feel small, but somehow at street level it’s often harder to understand the scope of everything; New York moves so fast, with energy levels so high around you, it’s often too easy to think all of it is normal. We didn’t dine at Untitled and given that they’re in the news this week for altering their business strategy as it pertains to tipping, it would have been great to post about that. But we didn’t eat there and ended up with a fried chicken sandwich from Mighty Quinn’s…. [Continue reading]

The long goodbye is always the hardest. And while school happens and time passes, we still have to find ways to pass the time, and to fill our bellies. One thing that I know for sure, no other city in America will have the variety in Thai cuisine or the number of choices for northern Thai just a bus ride away from home. Even though Chiang Mai in Red Hook is still seeking a permanent home, it seems to have already hit its stride…. [Continue reading]
