Prosperity Dumplings Review: Prosperity Dumplings

There are a few things that as good as getting five dumplings for a dollar. Most of those things are NC-17 so we'll not go there. The king of these "dollar dumpling" places used to be Vanessa's. They get the most business, and the dumplings are always fresh. A year ago they expanded their operation and raised the price by a dumpling. Now it's four dumplings for a dollar there. Still a great deal, but if you just walk down Eldrige street for two blocks, you'll find that Prosperity Dumplings is still going strong as one of the better dollar dumpling places in Manhattan. One thing that always gives me pause is how these places are able to make any money at all. If each dumpling comes out to $0.20, what exactly is the profit margin? It can't be more than a few cents a piece....

Snowy sunday

After two months of being a parent, I can say that it doesn't get any easier! The food blogging pretty much has stopped but it's nice to take...

Pork Shoulder Test Two

Alright, so after my first attempt at pork shoulder, I knew that I had to do it again. Since the weather is getting warmer and warmer, it probably would be a good idea NOT to use the oven for five hours. Yea...

Hunger sauce and the Federal Trade Commission

Even after blogging for a while, I still haven't learned the golden rule. The golden rule is that you never go to a new restaurant until they're done settling in, because the service or food can be choppy. There's nothing worse than expecting something smooth and delicious and just not getting it. And if you go right when they open? Well, that's not their fault, unless they end up sucking it real hard. A few weeks ago I went to a new sandwich shop on its first day. Midtown Lunch had mentioned it and I wanted to go up there and possibly get some of the early pictures. See, maybe I deserve the sub par experience because I tried to get in there too early. If you order take-out and it takes them 28 minutes to get you the food, it kinda throws ya off. I...

Talde Review: Talde is aight

The most interesting thing to hit twitter yesterday (for food lovers at least), was the dust up that resulted from this Gilt Taste article between Francic Lam (Gilt Taste editor) and Eddie Huang (Baohaus). It's a fascinating read if you haven't seen it. Just like most of the time, I think people need to relax about whities cooking 'ethnic' food, because if you subscribe to Tyler Cowen's belief that "all food is ethnic food," then everyone is cooking ethnic food. If you don't know who Tyler Cowen is, he's like a genius economist that loves food. I'm gonna trust his take on what is or isn't ethnic. And as for white chefs cooking Asian food, I think that's just how it is in America sometimes because it's got a lot of white people. But sometimes you get Asian food created by an Asian (I'm careful...

Grand Bo Ky Restaurant Review: Grand Bo Ky

"Concrete jungle where dreams are made of, There's nothing you can't do, Now you're in New York!" These are the words of Alicia Keys from Jay-Z's recent hit, Empire State of Mind. As it applies to the restaurant world in New York City, the one thing that you can't do in the past was expand to your hearts content. In the past, rent was a prohibitive factor that limited the ambitions of restaurateurs. A couple of weeks ago, NYTimes did a feature on Michael Bao Huynh and his quest for a dining empire due to the lesser rent in these tough times. Well, you don't have to be a big shot to expand these days, even places in Chinatown are expanding. Bo Ky has been a steady presence on Bayard street for years. A couple of weeks ago, they opened a second location on Grand...

Cupcake rant and moral high grounds and bread

Cupcakes are an interesting thing. They get some very excited at the sweet mix between frosting and bite sized cake. Lately, they seem to have gotten so big that there's some backlash. Sarah DiGregorio of the Village Voice wrote about how all this cupcake craze just needs to stop. Cupcakes don't really bother me that much though. You guys all know when something bothers me. I tend to wear my heart on my sleeve when it comes to crazy shit (read: Alice Waters). Let me explain to you the difference. Do you remember Tamagotchis? If you didn't grow up as a child of the 90s, you wouldn't know...
