Food in Mouth

Stand Review: Stand burger is merely ok and I hate food moralists

Growing up in a Chinese home, I rarely ate hamburgers. To us, burgers were greasy American food, the kind of stuff you eat if you want to get fat. If you want to stay healthy, you eat the Chinese stuff, not the American shit. That might sound a little weird to you, but that's how it kind of was - our food versus their food. Now that I'm older and control my own diet, hamburgers have worked themselves into my life. A couple of days ago I went with Ming and got a cheeseburger from Stand. It was good but nothing to write home about. The only reason I went to Stand was because the line at the sandwich shop across the street was too long for my liking. The burger was cooked slightly past medium-rare. The meat was loosely packed and flavorful. They were actually...

Spur Gastropub Review: Seattle Restaurant Week at Spur

Our first night in Seattle, we saw goats underneath a highway. It was the oddest thing for me. You just don't expect goats in the middle of a city. This is way cooler than that guy who ate pizza with his goat in NYC (NYMag coverage). Apparently what happens is that the city of Seattle contracts out these goats to eat vegetation underneath some highway (Seattle PI). Pretty cool looking. We ended up at Spur Gastropub from a tweet and some advice on chowhound. It was Seattle Restaurant Week ($28 for 3 course dinner) when we were there, and normally I wouldn't do RW too much here in New York, I have no idea what regular food is like, I thought it'd be good to just try three courses. What I later learned after a week in Seattle was that food in Seattle is pretty much...

The Smoke Joint Review: The Smoke Joint

The most perfect day ever started out innocuously enough. Yea, the AFC and NFC Championship games were going to be on TV, but whatever. Hunger called our names and we listened. Originally I wanted to walk over to Carroll Gardens but it was twenty-five degrees outside - not optimal weather for a fifteen minute walk just for eating. For some random reason The Smoke Joint came to mind as something that would be a great way to start the day. Speaking of which, is the first meal of the day always breakfast or is it lunch if you eat it at 2pm? Or is that, "Danny, wake up earlier on the weekends?" Their website says they offer, "real New York Barbecue." I honestly have no idea what that is. We all know the well-known regions for cue are Texas, Memphis, Carolina, and St. Louis. But uh,...

Ghim Moh Hawkers

Guest Post by Jonathan - This is the last installment of the fooding Jonathan did while he was in Singapore. Check out the curry fish head or the laksa he wrote about earlier. Once again, his posts make me crave good cheap food in Asia. *sigh* Spending the morning at the Ghim Moh market, I started to build up an appetite. Like any good wet market, it is filled with fishmongers, butchers and grocers selling a variety of seafood, meats, fruits and vegetables. But perhaps more impressive than the actual market, is the hawker stands behind it. I used to think that Singapore was all food courts and shopping malls. It is, of course, much more; but then again what’s so wrong with food courts and shopping malls? Especially when we are talking about the variety and quality of food that they have to offer. There is...

Rhong-Tiam Express Review: Roti wraps at Rhong Tiam Express

Rhong-Tiam was a Thai restaurant that had recognition in the NYTimes and even earned a Michelin Star. The recognition from The Tire Man was confusing to some, and rightly so. I actually went to Rhong-Tiam once two years ago. On the menu, they put little chili icons next to dishes to denote spiciness. I picked a noodle dish that had as many chilis as the star dish on the menu, Pork on Fire. Then I proceeded to scare Steph with how much a dude can sweat while attempting to eat dinner. Seriously, the waitress was scared by my face and brought me an iced tea, on the house. That's how crazy it was. But then Rhong-Tiam closed and a new shop, Rhong-Tiam Express opened up farther uptown. They traded their sit-down restaurant by NYU for a more casual take-out place in the Flatiron. Now Rhong-Tiam express...
