Chef Yu Review: Chef yu is solid

The other day my roommate told me about a Chinese restaurant near her office. I was skeptical because she works around 34th street area - the tundra of the midtown tundra that is the New York food landscape. "Yea my Chinese coworkers took me to Chef Yu's and it was really good." She told me. I had to see about that! I went twice last week, and came away a believer. Chef Yu is tucked under construction awnings right now; walking down the street you could easily miss it. It is not like walking down the street and seeing Jean Grey or Professor Snape because you always notice THAT. But I guess people are easier to spot than restaurants sometimes. (Oh and I did not see those two at the restaurant, I was just making a point about spotting comic book characters and evil professors on...

Sam Sifton and trustworthiness

The New York Times has named its next food critic. Sam Sifton is the man of the hour, the guy who is supposed to replace Frank Bruni. Eater has provided a dossier, Daniel Mauer of Grub St: NY has commented on the power of the restaurant critic, and Ed Levine of SE:NY has showered Sifton with rainbows and unicorns. What really caught my attention thus far has been Sam's own comments from The New York Times. His comments on the internet went like this, "I don’t know that I trust the opinion of that guy who loved the sandwiches at Xie Xie and wrote about it on his blog, or Yelp, or Eater, or Midtown Lunch. (Why prevaricate? I don’t trust his opinion.)" The truth is I don't the context of the Susan B quote, but as a person who fought for women's suffrage but it's...

Jing Fong Review: Jing Fong is packed

Some foods bring familiarity and comfort, and for my friends and me, dim sum is such a thing. After a night of watching a horrible movie called Shoot 'em Up (really, it is so bad I do not want to give you the IMDB link), what we needed was comfort. And Clive Owen, you just cannot pull off pointless movies the way Jason Statham can. Please, stick to more poignant films like Children of Men. On Sunday we mozied on by to Jing Fong this past weekend and braved the crowds. I love how in restaurant speak, "5 minutes" really means at least twelve or so. How does that work? In the grand scheme of things, a ten minute wait during lunch rush really is not bad at all. The turnover was really fast that day. Of course we got chicken feet to start. Again, how...

Tasty Hand-Pulled Noodles Review: Tasty Hand Pulled Noodles

Warm weather has left New York, and that means it's soup season. It's also hand-pulled noodle season. While some people can appreciate a warm bowl of soup and sweating it out during the hotter months, I find greater comfort in soupy meals when it's colder outside. Last week I headed down to Tasty Hand-pulled Noodles for a nice bowl of noodles. This place has been covered before at Eating in Translation and at Robyn's blog. Both of them went soon after the noodle shop opened, and neither really talked about the fact that Tasty Hand-Pulled Noodles has great dumplings. Really, is it any surprise that a hand pulled noodle place can make great dumplings? It seems like they ALL do 'em, and they all do them really well. Seriously, they all do dumplings at least 47x better than that dumpling truck that got nominated for the...
